Mild / minimal stimulation IVF

Minimal stimulation IVF

This approach reduces the cost of medication, is associated with less discomfort and avoids the possible negative effects of high dose of fertility medications egg quality. Lower estrogen levels appear to result in a more healthy endometrial lining for embryo implantation. Minimal stimulation is an option for select patients. It yields fewer number of eggs than conventional stimulation. There is some evidence that the number of healthy embryos (with normal chromosomes) maybe comparable in minimal stimulation and conventional stimulation protocols.

Minimal stimulation IVF is suitable for select women with low response to ovarian stimulation (produce one to two eggs). It is not a protocol to be used on all infertile couples undergoing IVF as it yields lower pregnancy rates.

Oral agents like clomid or letrozole are used to initiate stimulation. They are sometimes supplemented with low dose of injectable medication. Ovulation is prevented using antagonist in the last days of stimulation. Ovulation is triggered using Gonadotropin releasing hormone agonist or hCG. Egg retrieval can be performed under local anesthesia. The pregnancy rate after minimal stimulation is lower than that after conventional stimulation. It is suitable for women with low response to ovarian stimulation (produce one to two eggs).
